Been To The East

May 22nd, 2008

Recent events have had my head spinning, so when the opportunity came up (thank goodness for conferences in stunning locations) to visit Florida’s sunny Gulf coast I jumped at the chance. My favorite things about Captiva Island were the beaches and the birds. Osprey were nesting everywhere I looked. What a treasure trove of bird activity!

I mentioned on Twitter that I took a few pictures of said birds and beaches. Enjoy:

Thank you for the pictures! We were last down in Sanibel/Captiva well before Hurricane Charlie, and after hearing about the devastation in its wake, I’m happy to see the area on its way to recovery. (I’m talking about the natural environment here: I don’t know about the economy of Sanibel.)

I’m sorry to see the bird stole you fish! I hope he was kind enough to return it.

Looks like you had some good R&R and also an enjoyable trip.

All the best in Russia! Will be a blast! Don’t forget, when flying to Soviet Russia plane flies you!

Joking aside, it’s a very cool thing to get to work with fellow scientists on the other side of the planet. Language barriers can prevent the exchange and communication of ideas and knowledge – a fundamental requirement for understanding. There are some brilliant Russians out there! Good luck!

Nice. Being the photographer I am (or try to be), I’d like to see ’em bigger! What a set of photo-ops you had there in FL. Nice! Birds, nests, beaches, waves. Paradise!

Check out my *real* gallery of images at the address above. It’s somewhat disorganized at the moment, but, there are still some decent shots in there.

    Cheers,

Oh I am so jelous, nice pics. Oh BTW, there is a Space Shuttle launch on Saturday May 31 at the Cape which also has a bird santuary. It’s unfortunate you could not fit that into your schedule. I must admit you had a better week then I did. I had the luxary of 200 MM of rain. Excuss me while I go finish building that ark.

    TTFN,

Hi Kirsten – Totally off subject and tried some other method to contact, but if you started out in Monte Rio and your Dad’s name is Charles then I am a very old acquaintence and family friend. I’ve lost contact with your Dad. I’m the fellow who pinged you on skype a couple of days ago. Best regards – Denny from Sebastopol
